Air fryers have become a popular kitchen appliance, revolutionizing how many people cook by offering a healthier alternative to traditional frying. However, experts have recently highlighted several potential safety risks associated with their use. Here are seven key points to ensure safe and effective air fryer usage.

    1. Avoid Cooking Whole Chickens

Cooking a whole chicken in an air fryer is a bad idea due to the appliance’s design limitations. According to experts, the hot air circulation required for even cooking cannot be achieved with a whole chicken inside. This can result in unevenly cooked meat, with the outside potentially burning while the inside remains raw.1 For better results, joint the chicken into smaller pieces before frying.

    2. Fresh Cheese Can Be Problematic

While breaded cheese products like mozzarella sticks can be successfully cooked in an air fryer, fresh cheese is not recommended. Fresh cheese has a low melting point, which can cause it to burn quickly and create a mess. Halloumi is an exception due to its higher melting point, making it safe to cook.2

    3. Popcorn Might Not Pop

Air fryers often do not reach the high temperatures required to pop popcorn kernels. Experts suggest using a microwave instead, as it is more efficient and likely to yield better results. Attempting to make popcorn in an air fryer could result in frustration and wasted ingredients.

    4. Fresh Greens Can Be Blown Around

Lightweight fresh greens like spinach, lettuce, and kale are not suitable for air fryers. The powerful fan can blow these greens around, creating a mess and leading to uneven cooking. Instead, it’s better to use traditional methods like baking or using a stovetop for making kale chips.

    5. Toast Isn’t Worth the Effort

While it is technically possible to make toast in an air fryer, the results are often disappointing. The bread can dry out, and crumbs can get stuck at the bottom of the basket. Additionally, the toast requires flipping halfway through cooking, making it more effort than it’s worth compared to using a toaster or grill.

    6. Pasta and Rice Need Water

Air fryers are not designed for boiling or steaming, which are essential processes for cooking pasta and rice. Trying to prepare these foods can lead to improper cooking and potential safety risks. Reheating pasta and sauce, however, is possible, but a microwave is definitely more efficient.

    7. Potential Safety Hazards

Beyond the specific foods that should be avoided, there are general safety concerns when using air fryers. Overcrowding the basket, not using proper utensils, and failing to follow manufacturer guidelines can lead to overheating, fires, and other hazards. It’s crucial to read and follow the instructions provided with your air fryer to ensure safe usage.

Air fryers can be a fantastic addition to the kitchen, offering convenience and healthier cooking options. However, being aware of their limitations and potential safety risks is essential. Avoid cooking whole chicken, fresh cheese, popcorn, fresh greens, toast, pasta, and rice in them to prevent mishaps and ensure delicious, safely cooked meals. By following expert advice and understanding the capabilities of your air fryer, you can enjoy its benefits without compromising on safety.
