I’m angry about a lot of things, which you know if you’ve ever read anything I’ve written. One of those things is the double standard of Hollywood. When your favorite actor goes gray, they’re distinguished, and a ‘silver fox.’ When your favorite actress goes gray, you won’t notice–because now a woman twenty years younger has her role. I could start listing off these movies, and I will. Anything George Clooney or Richard Gere has been in in the past 20 years; Gemini Man, where a 50-year-old Will Smith romanced a 35-year-old Mary Elizabeth Winstead–the girl from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. And that trend continues outside the movies. Right now, Leonard DiCaprio’s future girlfriend is just being born. Happy birthday, sweetheart. That’s why it’s nice to see actresses spitting in the face of these conventions like Salma Hayek has with a new, no-makeup selfie.
Grey Hair, No Makeup–Don’t Care
Salma Hayek, 54, posted a selfie on Wednesday, September 23rd, where she appeared to be sans-makeup–although her skin looks better than mine ever has. Although Hayek runs a makeup and skincare line called Nuance, she’s actually known for her no-makeup selfies. Lying with her head atop a dark blue towel, she captioned her post “the white hair of wisdom”–then repeated it in Spanish and French. (“Las canas de la sabiduría” and “Les cheveux blancs de la sagesse,” if you were wondering. She also added the hashtags #whitehair and #hairspiration.
The white hair in question are a few thin streaks of silver. And while this frustrates me to no end about our culture (That’s not white hair! That’s streaks! That happens to everyone? Are we really going to act like 54-year-old Hayek is a crone?) I also applaud her embracing those hairs. (1, 2, 3)
Hayek And Makeup
“During the day, I just put on a little foundation and rub a little lipstick on my cheeks,” she told the New York Times in 2017. “Of course,” she said, “I have to get all dolled up for work and for press.”
I’d love to know how much makeup Brad Pitt puts on to greet the press. Tweet us and tell us, Brad. (2)
Hayek Gets Candid
In the New York Times piece, Salma Hayek is honest and straightforward about her approach to her appearance. Although the article is set up as one of those “look at your favorite celebrity–isn’t her face more important than her acting” pieces, despite an opening paragraph that claims she “may have broken into Hollywood via ‘hot girl’ roles, but she long ago left them in the ‘Desperado’ dust.”
“It doesn’t matter what my diet philosophy is,” she declares, “because I don’t follow it. I don’t have the discipline. . . I’m a craver — let’s face it.”
As for her hair? “It’s my natural color, and it’s my natural white hairs,” she says. “I don’t dye my hair . . . because I don’t have the patience to sit through it. I don’t want to spend what’s left of my youth pretending I’m younger and then not enjoying life.” (2)
