The 2022-2023 flu season resulted in 26 million cases, with 290,000 hospitalizations and 19,000 deaths. As of late November 2023, the CDC reports that there have already been over 2,000 hospital admissions for the flu this year. We share these statistics to highlight the potential consequence of influenza, and the importance of taking precautions against catching or spreading this common, but potentially deadly, disease.
One of the easiest ways to help avoid catching the flu or spreading it to loved ones is to receive a flu shot. This vaccine is available for almost all age groups and typically protects against three or four strains of the viruses responsible for the illness.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot?
Adults of all ages, and children over six months, should get vaccinated against the flu unless they have health conditions that make the shot inadvisable. Even the young can catch and spread this virus to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and the immunocompromised. Such people are often family members, but can also include teachers, babysitters and even strangers. For those over 65, high-dose flu vaccines are available.
Where Can I Get a Flu Shot?
You don’t have to go to a doctor to get this vaccination. To make it convenient, many pharmacies, including those in grocery stores, offer it. In Sioux Falls, Hy-Vee, Lewis Drug and Walgreens pharmacies are some common locations to receive the vaccine. Some employers offer flu shots at special vaccination events right on site. At Center for Family Medicine, we welcome you to stop by for a flu shot.
Can Everyone Get a Flu Shot?
Most, but not all, people can get a flu shot. If you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine, you should avoid it. Talk to your doctor before getting this, and any vaccine, if you have any questions or concerns.
To schedule your flu vaccine or be treated if you think you’ve caught the flu, schedule an appointment at Center for Family Medicine.
