Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, confirmed that she has been diagnosed with cancer.
In a short video posted to the official Prince and Princess of Wales Instagram account, Middleton directly addresses the camera while sitting outside in a striped shirt and her signature long waves. After thanking fans for their support and understanding, she says, “it has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family.”
As noted by The Independent, the video was filmed on Wednesday, March 20. In it, Middleton explains that in January, she went through a “major abdominal surgery” in London, which had been previously shared by the royal family. Middleton explains that at the time they thought her condition was non-cancerous, but tests after the operation proved otherwise. The diagnosis came as a “huge shock.” Under the advice of her medical team, Middleton began “a course of preventative chemotherapy” and says she’s at the “early stages” of that treatment.
Middleton does not directly address the recent viral speculation around her being “missing,” though she does subtly reference the ongoing conversation about her absence from public life, as well as her need for privacy. “As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery to start my treatment,” Middleton explains. “But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.” King Charles III was also diagnosed with cancer in early February.
Middleton continues by saying, “I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on things that will help me heal in my mind, body, and spirits.” She is grateful for the love and kindness she’s received but hopes fans will understand that she and her family need “time, space, and privacy” so she can focus on completing her treatment. “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I’m able, but for now, I must focus on making a full recovery.” She ends the video by sending her best wishes to others dealing with cancer. “Please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
